Greeter Protocol

When you are assigned the duty of being our greeter, you should remember the following:

1. You should be at the meeting by 11:45 AM in order to greet everyone as they come to the meeting.

2. You should bring a "Greeter's Gift" for the raffle. The gift should be approximately $20.00 in value.

3. You will be leading the giving the inspiration of the day, leading the salute to the flag, and introducing the visiting Rotarians. It is a good idea to watch the visiting Rotarians sign in, so that you can ask them about any complicated names or classifications.

4. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

New Year Edition

The San Ramon Rotary Club meeting was called to order at 12:15 pm with a few sober Rotarians with hangovers from various new year celebrations attending.  For those of you who may have forgotten from the weekly reminders from President Grizzly Lay, Mark Daniel Maloney is our RI President still and our theme this year is “Rotary Connects the World”.  The famous Marv Remmich gave a pithy thought for day to start our new year:
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.  That’s why they call it the present”

And as a bonus:

“Life is short, live it.  Love is rare, grab it.  Anger is bad, dump it.  Fear is limiting, face it.”

So with that in mind, all Rotarians faced our President and called it a present.

After the flag salute and a Mike Thelen led patriotic song, Colette announced that this month is vocational month and that we would be sharing pizza at Cal High for our meeting on January 16th.  The Christmas party was a great success and Colette thanked all those who organized the event with congratulations.

Marv shared that he has been in real estate since December 25, 1942, married Susan who has become a “cowgirl” with two horses and a Ram Diesel Truck.  Marv recently purchased a 2 horse with trainer truck to transport the horses (and presumably his wife).  But Marv says he likes this aspect of he and his wife’s life since 95% of the sport involving show horses are “good looking women”.   Now Marv wants to be a cowboy.

At long last, Ann Lucena, CEO of San Ramon Regional Medical Center was introduced as she ponders her potential admission into the club. By far the more talented and accomplished hospital CEO that we have seen in years, club members welcomed her wholeheartedly.

Holiday announcements fine free
Edgardo announced that his wife recently retired but is now back to work giving him his daily freedom.  Members suggested that Edgardo should consider that his lovely wife probably went back to work to preserve her daily freedom which struck Edgardo with some sense of irony.
Judy celebrated the New Year at Ruth Chris Steak House while several members had a wonderful time at Crow Canyon.

Program:  Grateful Garment Project
Marv introduced our speaker, Lisa Blanchard, Executive Director and Founder of the Grateful Garment Project.  She holds an AS in Business, BS in Human Services and a Masters in Nonprofit Administration.  All of this higher education was achieved after she was 35 years old following the raising of her family.

The Grateful Garment project was conceived as a school project when Lisa identified a community need among rape victims and agencies serving this at risk population.  When rape victims are examined by health professionals, the victim must surrender all of their clothing as evidence but there was no organized way to provide clothing to the victim following the examination.  Paper gowns and trash bags for personal belongings resulted in further loss of dignity and increased victim shame.  Lisa imagined an organization that would provide clothing to these vulnerable individuals.  She began at a San Jose Hospital through its Foundation in providing needed clothing which, by law, must be new clothing (not used items). The Santa Cruz Sexual Assault Response Team, hearing of the success of this program, requested consideration of expanding these services to their county.

Upon graduation, Lisa dedicated herself to responding to this unmet need expanding from 13 counties to 48 counties within one year providing over 92% of California with access to her organization’s services.

She explained that the Grateful Garment Project provides victims of sexual violence with clothing and other resources and the opportunity to reclaim their dignity and begin the healing process.  The organization serves hospitals, shelters, law enforcement, clinics and other nonprofits meeting victim’s immediate needs after a crisis.  Lisa shared that her project has expanded to include all ages including senior and sex traffic youth.  California is the #1 sex traffic business with the average age being 10-11 young boys.
In response to a question about how many perpetrators are caught and prosecuted, Lisa indicated that 25% are reported, 12% cases are taken, 6% of the cases go to court and 2% are prosecuted.

Lisa has now set up a sophisticated inventory management and ordering system for organizations to maintain adequate clothing types and sizes.  In addition, grooming items, protein bars, comfort items and essentials such as blankets and backpack are available for distribution to assist rape victims on the road to recovery.

The Rotary Club was invited to support the Grateful Garment Project through club participation, individual donations, volunteer or become a Board member (organization is domiciled out of San Jose).  For more information contact gratefulgarment.org, email info@gratefulgarment.org or call 408-674-5744.

Gobind brought Sees Candy for those who did not have enough calories over the holidays!

Vera invited members to participate in the upcoming Shadow Day on April 2nd .   She needs professional sites and drivers.  Good new year’s resolution to make a commitment now.

The raffle was held with Kathy Ophelia winning both the greeter’s gift and $10 having drawn the blue marble.  The jack pot is rising.

Next week’s program will be Christene Burr with Junior Achievement.  Start the New year off right and attend a lunch meeting!

Respectively submitted
