Meeting Notes for February 3, 2022
Scribe Notes, February 3, 2022

By:  Hermann Welm

President Terry “Showtime” Koehne was nowhere to be seen and neither was PP Chris “Top Gun” Gallagher, so PP Colette “Lady Grizzly” Lay  had to step up to the plate!  She opened the meeting at the San Ramon Community Center, reminding us that this year’s Rotary International President is Shekhar Mehya from India, whose theme for the year is “Serve to Change Lives.”   She also advised us that February is “Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution Month!”

Our Greeter, John Milich, gave us his Thought for the Day, “Make a difference every day!”  He then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  He went on to state that he and Terry have been very busy and, although they are looking forward to retiring someday, it won’t be all that soon.

Michael Roberts noted that the “Foundation Day” he and several others attended was very informative in that they were able to learn how projects, both local and foreign, work their way thru the Rotary process.  Suggestions for new projects are always welcome.

All were pleased to see Priya Jhingan at the meeting!  She stated that it was her birthday  --  she is now old enough to buy a six-pack of beer IF she wanted to  --  so she took the day off to join us.

Lady Grizzly showed off a tote bag she had imprinted with the Rotary logo and the club’s name.  She had quite a few printed and will work out a way to put them to good use in advertising our club.

IcebreakerMichael Roberts asked each table to discuss “If you were a car, which car would you be?”   At this Scribe’s table, PP Glen Weber came up with an interesting, albeit self-serving, answer:  A Bugotti, since he knows he would then be well taken care of!

Visiting Rotarians:  None.

Guests:   Ron Barker, of Danville; our speaker.

Program:   Chris Gayler introduced our speaker, Ron Barker.  Ron attended BYU, played basketball and then coached the same sport. Ron recalled that as a recent graduate he landed a job investigating Software Piracy, along with three other young people.  That company had been employing former police and FBI investigators and was not satisfied with the results they were achieving. By contrast, Ron and his three colleagues recovered $17 million in their first year thru the use of less structured approaches.

Some time later he was approached by the NCAA to join their enforcement group.  This turned out to be a difficult job, requiring persistence and skilled negotiations as athletes, coaches and administrators were being investigated for violating NCAA recruitment policies and prohibitions against financial enticements.

Things got a “little easier” when he then joined the PAC-10 enforcement unit which operated independent of the NCAA.  However, the fact that there were far fewer universities to deal with, created a situation where he would be dealing with the same people over and over again.  This required even more tact and a rigorous level of confidentiality so as to effectively enforce the rules, yet not burn bridges!

Ron’s most memorable case involved Arizona State’s one-legged wrestler, Anthony Robles.  Born with this condition, Anthony excelled at wrestling in the 125-pound class.  He achieved an amazing record in high school  (96 to 0, for his Junior and Senior years) and became a two-time Arizona Champion.  At Arizona State he became a 3-time All-American and, in 2011, after a 36 to 0 season, the NCAA National Champion.

Anthony status was challenged by rivals because the absence of one leg reduced his weight sufficiently to allow him to wrestle in a weight class lower than his body, had it been complete, would allow.  Anthony and ASU prevailed in this challenge and he went on to become a motivational speaker after graduation!

Raffle:  The Greeter’s Gift of $20 was won by our guest Newbie Kerry Richard. The chance to draw the Golden Marble for a $200 cash prize was also won by Kerry; he unfortunately (for him) drew a Blue one!

Next Week’s Program:  At the Community Center, once again!  Our speaker will be PP Colette Lay, and will include an outing to the adjacent “Story Walk” that our club sponsored.  BE THERE, or suffer the consequences of “Lady Grizzly’s” rage!
