Weekly Program
New Story June 01 2021

By: Priya Jhingan

Lady Grizzly is back y’all! Our lovely Past President welcomed us, shared that this year’s RI President is Holger Knaack, and presented the theme of “Rotary Opens Opportunities”.

Lourdes Ylagan, our greeter today, shared two thoughts:

  • Some of the best lessons in life are learned from past mistakes.

  • Nothing is permanent in this wicked world, including our problems.

After leading us through the pledge, Lourdes shared some updates on her life. As many of you may know, Lourdes’s brother unfortunately passed away a few months ago in February. She’s currently cleaning up his place in Manhattan from a distance, 3000 miles away. Lourdes is also keeping busy with work. Our condolences to you and your family, Lourdes.

Colette mentioned that there is just a week left in Youth Service Month, and then she proceeded to everyone’s favorite part of the meeting...

This week’s “News you may have missed” included:

  • Man returns to his 6 million home to discover someone had borrowed it to get married. No charges were brought against the couple.

  • Woman’s home completely trashed by a flock of giant California condors. There was poop everywhere, needless to say.

Announcements

Gary Sloan and birthday boy Chris Gallagher joined us from Hawaii. Yes, it was Top Gun‘s birthday last Thursday! He did not make much of an appearance at the meeting, as he was probably drinking and diving at 9am on the island to celebrate. It was also Garth Riopelle’s birthday on Thursday, and he perhaps found something else to do as well since he wasn’t at the meeting. Other recent birthdays included Lucky Sandhu and Dennis Harvey, who were apparently also out celebrating.

Julie McKinney talked about the raffle - we were still at $300. Fred Nevarez gave an update that Cynthia Jones’s open heart surgery went well, and she’s in ICU for 5-7 days as a standard procedure.

Some interesting recognition-free news came up. We learned that Mike Conklin had fallen off the second story while trying to fix something. He went to emergency for 3 hours, and no one visited him. He then gave his ladder to the landscaper to prevent further incidents. We are glad you’re okay, Mike!

Also, Patti Hennigan’s daughter graduated from school last Friday with a Bachelor’s in Decision Sciences, and she’s getting married next Sunday. Congratulations on the huge life news, Samantha Hennigan!

Program - Patty Hoyt & Burning Man

Missed Burning Man? Burning Man, or at Least Its Art, Is Coming to You - The New York Times

How We Burn the Man | Burning Man Journal

Patty Hoyt joined us to talk about her experiences with Burning Man, a gathering 100 miles from Reno, NV.

What is Burning Man?

  • An annual experiment in a temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance. You have to bring everything you need with you.

  • A festival focused on community, art, and self-expression

  • A party (65,000 people)

Patty’s story

  • Her husband had wanted to go for a long time, but Patty wanted to wait until the kids left the house.

  • As soon as their kids left, her husband went out and got tickets, and they went!

  • We learned that if you’re a virgin burner, the first thing you do when you get there is get out of the car and get all dusty, to get used to the dusty environment you’ll be in during the trip.

  • She’s now been 6 times! Patty’s camp is called “Grateful Floyd”.

Why do people go?

  • The art: There are really amazing and thought-provoking pieces and experiences all over the community.

  • Mutant vehicles: People decorate and create very interesting vehicles, and you can drive them out. (There’s a burning man DMV there!)

Burning Man was founded on 10 principles:

  • Radical inclusion

  • Gifting

  • Decommodification

  • Radical self reliance

  • Radical self expression

  • Communal effort

  • Civic responsibility

  • Leave no trace

  • Participation

  • Immediacy (being present)

The Man

  • Burns on Saturday night: There’s a huge party and a festive atmosphere.

The Temple

  • Much more solemn

  • People go in and leave mementos of lost loved ones.

  • When the temple burns, it’s moving, emotional, and thoughtful.

Black Rock City

  • The entire Burning Man “city” is shaped like a semicircle.

  • Everything is based around the man that’s in the center.

Thank you so much, Patty, for sharing your experiences as a burner! We also learned that Patty is retiring very soon and traveling with her husband in their red pickup truck. They’ll be visiting Airbnbs, and figuring out where they want to be next. June 30th is their retirement date. Everyone will miss you!

Raffle

Karen McNamara won the raffle! This marked the first time she’s ever won in 12 years, and she also got the white marble to boot!!! A shocked Karen went home with $300. Congrats, Karen!
