Weekly Program
Meeting Notes for April 7, 2022
President Terry “Showtime” Koehne opened the meeting with the Rotary theme: “Serve to Change Lives.” Our club theme is: “Reconnecting - Back Together Again.” R.I. President is Shekhar Mehta.
Dr. Glen Weber stepped in for Lucky Sandhu as this week’s greeter and led the flag salute. President TK took over with his thought of the day: “When you lie on your back and cry in your pillow, tears get in your ears.” We learned that Lucky was unable to be with us at the meeting because he’s in India helping his mother settle some family affairs, and possibly arranging for her to move to the U.S.
Welcome guests and Visiting Rotarians – we were fortunate to have two of each attend this meeting. Rotarians Judy Denning, a recurring visitor from the Rotary Club of San Rafael, and presenter Mike Maxwell from the Pleasant Hill Club. Gini Graham Scott was a first-time visitor after receiving our invitation through the SR Chamber mixer, and Charlie Crothers from Choice in Aging accompanied his colleague Mike Maxwell.

FOUNDATION NEWS
Your San Ramon Rotary Foundation has approved a match of up to $2,000 for all Club member donations made to THE Rotary Foundation - Disaster Response Fund in support of humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.  All donations received to this Fund by April 30, 2022, through Rotary International will go specifically to this effort. If our members collectively donate $2,000, our Club Foundation will match that for a total Club donation of $4,000.  In speaking with District 5160 reps, they have already hit their $50,000 goal!  There are two ways you can do this. - but please do this by April 15.
1.   Donate directly to Disaster Response Fund | My Rotary and just send a quick email to Karen McNamara at wreckre8@comcast.net saying you donated $XXX online. (p.s.  If you log in to this page, you will also get Paul Harris credit....) This is the easiest way.
2.  Bring a check to the April 14th Rotary meeting made out to The Rotary Foundation.

PROGRAM – CHOICE IN AGING

Mike Maxwell is a 28-year member of the Rotary Club of Pleasant Hill. He attended Camp Royal as a high school junior in 1980! A few highlights from his professional life include being a high school educator at his alma mater Monte Vista High School, coaching football, baseball & tennis, Director of the YMCA in Pleasant Hill, Statewide Program Director for the California YMCA Model Legislature, Chief of Operations for the San Francisco Giants Baseball Camps and VP of Global Accounts for Waterlogic. In 2014 Mike was elected as a Trustee on the Contra Costa County Board of Education and is serving his 2nd term.
Mike currently serves as the Vice-President of the Aging in Place Campus for Choice in Aging in Pleasant Hill, where he oversees fundraising and construction of the new $26 million dollar Aging in Place Campus.
Choice in Aging currently serves 2.024 adult clients and 55 children. This link to their website will provide a comprehensive list and description of their programs, including Home Based Services, Alzheimer’s and mental health support, Day Programs, Caregiver Support and Preschool and Intergenerational Programs. There are also Russian and Farsi specific programs, each with about 45 – 55 participants.
In March 2020, Choice in Aging sprang into action to make our programs fully responsive to the COVID-19 crisis, creating a lifeline for isolated seniors in our community. They delivered personal protective equipment, distributed groceries and nutritious lunches and provided nursing and physical therapy to frail seniors at home. In addition, they provided curbside therapy to stressed-out caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s disease. They raised funds to buy life-saving pulse oximeters for board and care homes, and they helped seniors in high-risk nursing homes to transition out to live safely with relatives or in their own apartments.
Mike shared the current and ongoing plans for their campus site, including the addition of 83 single bedroom apartments for low-income housing, with 25 of those units dedicated to Veterans. If the funding of the $26M project can be obtained as expected, the completion date could be as early as 2024.
Call to action – what can you do to help this organization? Visit their site to learn first-hand what they do, volunteer your time, and/or donate. More information about all these options can be found on their website, linked at the beginning of this section.

RaffleMike Maxwell won the $20 greeter gift and donated it back to the club.  Judy Lewis pulled a blue marble but was pleased the $10 consolation prize allowed her to recoup her investment.
