Greeter Protocol

When you are assigned the duty of being our greeter, you should remember the following:

1. You should be at the meeting by 11:45 AM in order to greet everyone as they come to the meeting.

2. You should bring a "Greeter's Gift" for the raffle. The gift should be approximately $20.00 in value.

3. You will be leading the giving the inspiration of the day, leading the salute to the flag, and introducing the visiting Rotarians. It is a good idea to watch the visiting Rotarians sign in, so that you can ask them about any complicated names or classifications.

4. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

San Ramon Rotary
Crows Call
July 25, 2019

Where is our new President?  Lady Grizzly (aka Colette Lay) traveled to Indianapolis to see one of our newer members McKenna Lay compete in the Tae Kwon Do championship tournament.  Glen Weber stepped in as acting President this week calling the meeting to order at 12:15 pm as planned.  Mark Daniel Maloney from Decatur, Alabama is this year’s Rotary International President.  The new theme for the year is “Rotary Connects the World”.   Edgardo Carrillo stood in as Greeter who reminded members to be thankful for the privilege of being a Rotarian with a brief moment of silence.  Mike Thelen led us in a rousing “God Bless America” song.  Edgardo shared that he has been a Rotarian for 30 years with the belief that we are doing “God’s work”.  He is proud to be part of the Rotary family.
Acting President Glen Weber reviewed his qualifications for leading the meeting in Colette’s absence. Glen was the 4th San Ramon Rotary President from 1987-88 so he needed the practice.  He has a 30-year perfect attendance record and was tired of sitting among having lunch with fellow Rotarians so he was selected to lead us today.
Special guests included Anne and Brandon Tontz and a perspective new member, Lourdis, who was previously involved with Rotary in her teen years, came to America going to school and working.  She now has time to rejoin a Rotary Club and is exploring joining this club.  She was most welcomed, as the club has added several young men and women to our ranks creating more energy and diversity.  Beri Casper, one of the primary leaders of Camp Venture was also present.
Life Time Achievement Award
Brent Tucker was tasked with presenting a special award to Jay Tontz for his long years of service.  At 81 years old, Jay was recognized as a community leader, amazing Rotarian and celebrated professor at Cal State Hayward.  Brent recounted Jay’s considerable education from Cornell and North Carolina Universities becoming an Assistant Professor at the Air Force Academy and finally joining Cal State Hayward in 1969.   The former redheaded Brent Tucker was a junior in college when he met the equally red headed Professor Tontz who made a particularly dry subject of Economics interesting and alive. Jay became the President of Hayward Rotary in 1977 where Brent was also a member.  The San Ramon Rotary Club was enriched with the transfer of Jay Tontz (and Brent Tucker) to our club where Jay famously presented an annual economic forecast every year. (One of the most anticipated and well attended meetings of the year).  Jay’s wife, Anne and his son, Brandon accepted the Life Time Achievement Award on Jay’s behalf.   Glen Weber uttered the shared sentiments of club members that we have had a richer life for having known Jay Tontz.
Geoff Johnson remembrance:  The club observed a moment of silence in honor of Geoff Johnson who passed away on Tuesday.  Don Jones shared that Geoff was the first member inducted into the club following its initial charter.  He joined the club, dropped out to attend to his business, then rejoined a second time.  Geoff’s signature look was his distinct cowboy hat. His contributions to Rotary, his community and family will not be forgotten.  Don indicated that Geoff’s daughter would communicate details of any service to be held when available.

Other member’s health report:  Tom Port is undergoing open-heart surgery at John Muir-Concord and Mike Gunning is at San Ramon Regional Medical Center getting lab results on a potential developing condition.  Get Well Cards were circulated with our good wishes for a speedy recovery.
Sergeant at Arms
An explosion of energy and enthusiasm was unleashed with the appointment of Edgardo as Sergeant at Arms.  After announcing two “Assistant Sergeant’s”, Pat Paterson and Julie Fiedler, both decked out in red vests, Edgardo laid down the law.  All members who do not sport a Rotary pin at future meetings would be recognized $5.00, no exceptions.  “And that is the way it will be” so that Rotarians will be better emissaries for the club.  Playing both good cop, bad cop, Edgardo also awarded a “service star” to Glenn Weber for taking good care of his wife during her recovery, Guy Greco for becoming the unofficial Uber driver for Rotarians needing rides and Geoff Disch for his loyalty and commitment to the club.  Edgardo also announced that Birthday and Anniversary recognition would occur twice per month.  Please share the good, bad and ugly about our member activities so they can be appropriately recognized.

Recognitions:  In the after glow of Edgardo’s announcements, he recognized Pat Paterson’s 63rd wedding anniversary.  Pat is the proud father of 4 children, 6 grandkids and 2 great grandkids.  He has had 11 dogs, been associated with five (5) Rotary clubs in 45 years, lived in five (5) different States unless you include the sixth state of confusion.  He is also celebrating his wife’s birthday in the coming week.  Congrats Pat!

John Milich was recognized $15 for accepting a ride from Guy Greco, the Rotary Uber designated driver.

Golf:  Guy Greco recounted how he was paired with a 91-year old golf partner who beat Guy in a round of golf. Guy shared the lesson that you were never too old to enjoy life (or too young to get beat by an old guy).  It was unclear whether Guy’s partner was a really good golfer or if Guy’s golf game had significantly deteriorated beyond repair.  At any rate, the experience motivated Guy to initiate a duffer’s tournament in August and September.  He will be notifying interested members.

Fine Free Announcement:  Mark’s daughter was married and took her honeymoon in Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia.  Mark was clearly ecstatic!  What ever happen to the traditional trip to Niagara Falls?

Camp Royal and Camp Venture Program Presentation
Gary Sloan introduced the four candidates that San Ramon Rotary Club sponsored to attend Camp Royal (Angela Kan and Rohan Jayaram) and Camp Venture (Thomas Files and Roshni Aradhya).  Each of these students was sponsored by our Rotary Club at a cost of almost $900 each.  Gary arranged for another Camp Royal candidate from Cal High, Aakash Bhegade to be sponsored by the Danville Club who will present to that club.  After extolling the many virtues and accomplishments of these high school students, Gary introduced the two seniors attending Camp Royal.

Camp Royal
Rohan began the presentation modeling his Camp Royal t-shirt with 130 signatures on it.  He explained that the weeklong leadership camp was attended by 150 students and interacted with motivational experts to learn leadership skills in a remote wilderness in Northern California.  Students slept on open platforms and learned in an atmosphere of acceptance and support.  The focus of each day was either about relationships, opportunity, self-awareness and love.   The mindset of the week was encapsulated by the greeting “Tashi Daly” which roughly translated means “I honor the place in which lies your courage, greatness, hopes and dreams”.

Rohan gave a cogent interpretation of how Camp had altered his view of the world by explaining that he can live in the world appreciating the face value of a painting or live an enriched life by understanding the meaning within the painting.  (pretty deep for a 17 year old).  Lessons learned at camp included understanding how the “human factors” are weighted in your life:  knowledge, energy, compassion and structure.  He took away from camp that living in the past fosters regret living in the future fosters anxiety while living in the present fosters contentment.  When faced with the challenge of the “Wall”, a large structure that a 30-person team had to get over, Rohan recognized how each individual contributed to the challenge and addressed it in different ways.

Angela had a distinct camp experience coming to the realization that one must overcome one’s fear to grow.  She specifically noted that she learned that “positivity” was a muscle to be used and that life is often miraculous.  In this judgment free, support and open environment, Angela learned about self-discovery, how to work with different people who possessed varying perspectives.  She learned to acknowledge judgment and welcome happiness creating positivity.  Having a purposeful goal and facing your fears were critical touchstones for Angela.  As one counselor quoted:  “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else”.

Both Angela and Rohan shared various activities of the camp including skits, breaking boards and talent shows.  After one week life long friendships that may last a life time were revealed.  Anglea and Rohan suggested that to be an effective leader (and person)one should promote the following principles:

-Be more vulnerable
-Be more positive
-Have empathy for others
-Always seek self-discovery
-Engender awareness

Camp Venture
Roshni and Thomas (Juniors at Cal High) began their presentation by describing the atmosphere and schedule of their rigorous entrepreneur camp.  Living in dorms at St. Mary College, these students were exposed to experts in business, presentation skills and working cooperatively in groups.  The focus of the camp was to identify a product or service, develop marketing plans, business analysis, utilize a computer lab and present your business to a critical panel.  High caliber speakers included entrepreneurs, inventors and marketing experts to provide both context and working skills to the groups.  Each group had five members consisting of a CEO, CFO, CMO, CIO and COO.

The process included the development of a business plan that described the business, the competition, the finances, the marketing and the company’s next steps in a concise manner.  There was an opportunity analysis consisting of an industry analysis, target market, competitive analysis and opportunity summary.  A marketing strategy had to developed focused on product, price, promotion, place.

Thomas described his team’s product “Visi-bottle” a rectangular medicine bottle made of bio-degradable plastic that enabled larger font for easier reading and coding.

Roshni’s product was “My Wear”, an app that arranges outfits from one’s existing wardrobe based on personal options.

Competing against six teams, Thomas won first prize ($100) and Roshni’s Group won second prize.  A clean sweep for San Ramon Rotary!

In addition to the camaraderie engendered by the camp and the many fun activities in the evening, these hard working Interact members learned critical lessons to their future success:

  • Teamwork, conflict resolution, compromise
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • The importance of mentors and other connections
  • Time management

Both Thomas and Roshni said they learned lessons of time management, the importance of sharing ideas, “step up, step back”, draw on all resources and find common ground without sacrificing your principles or the message.

Acting President graciously allowed these presentations to go over our normal time allowance and members were very impressed with these four sponsored students.  Many Rotarians recalled how unprepared we were at 17 years old and how exceptional these candidates were in representing our club and Interact.

Despite the late meeting, a raffle was held where Julie Fiedler won the $20 greeter gift and one of the students, Roshni selected the blue marble and received $10.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Gary Sloan, Scribe
