Greeter Protocol

When you are assigned the duty of being our greeter, you should remember the following:

1. You should be at the meeting by 11:45 AM in order to greet everyone as they come to the meeting.

2. You should bring a "Greeter's Gift" for the raffle. The gift should be approximately $20.00 in value.

3. You will be leading the giving the inspiration of the day, leading the salute to the flag, and introducing the visiting Rotarians. It is a good idea to watch the visiting Rotarians sign in, so that you can ask them about any complicated names or classifications.

4. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

Meeting Notes for August 29, 2019 *corrections*

Our Grizzly President called the meeting to order at 12:15pm.  After announcing the obligatory Rotary theme for 2019-20, “Rotary Connects the World” and our Rotary International President is Mark Daniel Maloney (You will be tested on this someday), Terry Koehne was introduced to a rousing round of applause.  Rotarians took pictures of Terry to commemorate that Mr. Koehne actually attended a Rotary Meeting!  No doubt to make up for lost time, Terry shared TWO thoughts for the day and in honor of football season:

“Remember, tomorrow is promised to no one”, Walter Payton, Hall of Fame Running Back, Chicago Bears (1975-1987)

“Self praise is for losers. Be a winner.  Stand for something.  Always have class and be humble”.  John Madden, Head Coach, Oakland Raiders (1968-78)

Cathy Grijalva, from Dougherty Valley was introduced with some instruction on the correct name pronunciation.  Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Mr. Koehne told the club that he was celebrating having completed his last “back to school night” assuming his high school daughter graduates this year.  Always looking at the bright side of things, Terry’s son will be graduating from college and his daughter plans to attend DVC while Terry anticipates that all of his children will once again be living at home as “boomerang” children.  Terry has amazingly still employed as the Chief Communications Officer with the School District.  His wife is a special needs teacher with the schools.  Terry likes walks on the beach and hot tubs, walking in rain and tender movies about relationships.

He announced that he is organizing the Wine Bus this year for the auction scheduled for November 17 for 56 people.  This year will begin at a distillery in Livermore (where Chris, Colette and Geoff will no doubt refuse to leave), followed by a winery featuring Karaoke.  Can anyone sing melancholy Baby?

Don Jones was asked to lead us in a patriotic song.  Recounting that we had sung God Bless America, he broke out in “Happy Birthday” Mrs. President as we celebrated President Lady Grizzly’s day of conception plus nine months.

Table introductions featured Angie D’Angelo and Pavavni Puri from Dr. Jatinder Marwaha’s  office, our guest speaker.  Sandra Payer, new to San Ramon, shared that this was her second time to the club having not been frightened away from the club during her first visit.   Steve Porchet was seeking a marathon badge having attended four club meetings and withstood the dreaded orientation for new members.  We are rooting for you Steve!

The whole Lay family attended this meeting to celebrate their wife and mom’s birthday.  Brad, the designated pool guy, Brennan, tech support and McKenna, model Rotarian.
Our invigorated President, in an effort to engage our membership, presented the many opportunities for Rotarians to serve their community and enhance their fellowship.  Among the many activities:

September 12 – Members Night Out at Kathy Gailey’s house from 6:30p-9:30p.  Bring a bottle of wine and an appetizer in a disposable container.

September 21 -  DSVR Rotary V3 Septemberfest will be held.  Support a local Rotary Club by volunteering or come an enjoy the event.  Tickets and details at https://v3septemberfest.com

District Conference Seminar will be held on October 5th .  Chris Gallagher offered to drive up to 6 people in his gargantuan truck Zeus, known for its off road antics.  Chris shared that he may take the direct route to Fairfield with or without roads.

There will also be a Park Clean-up on October 19 from 9-12 but you will need to sign up as there are only 20 spots.

San Ramon Rotary Club is a service organization.  Let’s get more involved with the myriad of opportunities to serve your community.

Rotary Foundation:  Ray Giles offered a cogent view of Rotary International’s Foundation that emphasize changing and sometimes saving lives on a world wide basis.  It also supports local efforts such as the Story Walk Project featured this year.  All Rotarians are encouraged to participate at any level they can comfortably donate.  Ray covered a lot of ground in his allotted 90 seconds.

Edgardo is out of the hospital, much to the relief of our President, given the recent unfortunate loses of Rotarians in the first few weeks of her tenure.  Edgardo uttered Gary Sloan’s name throughout his stay at the hospital.  It is a miracle that he recovered and was treated well given this association.

Edgardo made the rookie mistake of referring to recognitions as fines and he was fined for the error.  Steve Wilcox picked up this recognition of $25 since he does not like “politically correct” language.  In the meantime, he recognized Don $5 for his phone going off, Colette $50 for her birthday and $50 for talking to her family (which Edgardo picked up).  Mr. Wilcox who has been a member for 19 years (and another 7 in Millbrae) was fined for not wearing his Rotary pin ($25).

Kathy Gailey visited the Oakley Rotary Club at the ungodly hour of 730 am.  She described it as delightful and fun.  She also asked for Rotarians to step forward and seek items from vendors at four distinct locations.  Edgardo, Lucky, Kathy and Colette all stepped forward.

Bill Harlan welcomed back Tom Port who recovered from Heart Surgery.  Bill reminded Rotarians that they did not have to go through the Surgery to be recognized in the future.

Cake was served in honor of Colette’s Birthday followed by a lecture on diet and wellness.

Gary Sloan did the honors of introducing our speaker Dr. Jatinder Marwaha.  Dr. Marwaha is a Board Certified Internist and Sleep Medicine.  He is the current Chief of Staff at San Ramon Regional Medical Center who assisted this former CEO in securing emergency coverage for the hospital at a critical time.  He is also the primary advocate for the Medical Staff becoming a major Auction Sponsor donating $5,000 for several years to this event.  This was received with enthusiastic applause.   Gary suggested that his real claim to fame was the he was the son-in-law to Gobind, married to a wonderful woman, Dimple, Gobind’s daughter.

Angie D’Angelo first spoke on the importance of skin care.  Aging decreases the texture of the skin, effects skin firmness, elasticity and risk of cancer.  Various treatments can be sought from cleansers to exfoliation (2-3 times per month), masks, facials, and peels to more serious interventions such as botox and laser procedures.

Dr. Marwaha spoke about weight loss.   While exercise can help, “calories are king”.  Normal BMI is 18.5 – 25.  Losing weight can promote healthy blood glucose levels, relieve back and joint tension, improves sleep health and your immune system.

Sleep apnea increases with age and sedatives, alcohol, smoking, obesity and nasal obstruction acting as risk factors.  Symptoms of sleepiness, snoring and high blood pressure can result from sleep apnea.  Three treatments are commonly used:

  1. CPAP (a mask used at night time to provide Continuous Positive Air Pressure)
  2. Surgery with 30-50% efficacy
  3. Oral appliance such as a mouth guard.

One can combine these modalities.

One can diagnose sleep apnea through a home test or a more extensive sleep study in a sleep lab.

Before questions were taken, Dr. Marwaha graciously suggested that Gary Sloan was the best CEO that SRRMC had ever had.  (And Gary did not even have to pay for that comment).

Questions from Rotarians ranged from how often one should change CPAPs.  Dr. Marwaha suggested seeing the physician once per year but noted that the newer machines monitored the efficacy of the machine adjusting pressure as needed.

A Rotarian on a “Keto” diet asked what Dr. Marwaha thought.  For short term use (6 weeks) it is ok but an injection to insure adequate muscle mass is maintained is recommended.

Gary Sloan’s phone rang during the presentation and was promptly fined for the offense.

At the end of his presentation, Dr. Marwaha announced that he would be donating a treatment item to the Auction valued at over $400.

Gary Sloan reminded all Rotarians to support the Interact Club by going to ShareTea at 2441 San Ramon Valley on Friday.  Colette planned to be there between 1230-130 and the Board of Interact will be their from 4-6p.

Cathy Grijalva won the greeter’s gift (wine) and $10 went to the blue selecting Mr. Brent Tucker.

Kathy Gaily awarded the President with a flask (standard operating equipment of Rotary Presidents) and Brad Lay presented Colette with some birthday balloons (we know that diamonds and flowers will follow).

The meeting was adjourned at 1:18pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Gary Sloan
