Weekly Program
Meeting Notes by Herman Welm, Photos by Patti Hennigan
President Michael “Sea Biscuit” Roberts opened the meeting at Tomahawk Steak, Chops and Seafood and led us in the Salute to the Flag.  He noted that this year’s Rotary International President is Jennifer Jones, whose theme for the year is “Imagine Rotary.”   This month’s Rotary focus is on Disease Prevention and Treatment.

The Thought for the Day is a quote by Rick Hansen, a Canadian paraplegic who in 1987 embarked on a “World in Motion” tour which raised $26 million for research into spinal injuries.  He is the founder and Chairman of the Rick Hansen Foundation.  “The wheelchair should not be a symbol of disability.  A wheelchair is a vehicle to liberation and freedom; a chariot for independence.”

Visiting RotariansNone

Guests:   Judy Thomas, wife of PP Tom Port.

Happy Dollars:  Chris Gayler and family travelled to Belize for Thanksgiving and found it to be an amazing place with very friendly people.  Cheri Braga went to Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving; no skiing, however since she gave that up some years ago!

Announcements:

PP Glen Weber asked all members to make a 2022 contribution to The PolioPlus Society.  Membership will start at $100 per year and can be accomplished in two easy steps:

  1.  Go to https://www.endpolio.org/donate and you can choose either annual recurring payments or monthly payments that add up to $100.00 or more.
  2.  Send an email to Mike Crosby (MikeCrosby@Rotary5160.org) indicating your having joined.  Give him your name, your club’s name and email address.  In case you have forgotten, Chris Gallagher, your club is “San Ramon!”

Kathy Gailey noted that we need more people to sign up for shifts at the Tree of Remembrance, starting this weekend at City Center.  The tree will be “staffed” Thursdays thru Sunday; it is located in front of the Nike store.  Supplies can be picked up at the Concierge office, in the immediate area of the tree.

Karen McNamara asked that you bring $25.00 Gift Cards from either Target or Safeway to the December 8th meeting.  These will be given to Trinity Center for distribution to their homeless clients.

Seabiscuit noted that we will be “DARK” on December 15th but that there will be an evening get-together at Tomahawk’s for members, spouses and friends.  Time:  5:30 to 7:30.

January 5th will also be “DARK!”

Recognitions:  Judy Lewis for her December 3rd birthday; kids will be coming to visit from Seattle.  PP Tom Port for his November 18th birthday.

Program:   Kathy Gailey and Julie McKinney tag-teamed a slide presentation about their “Chairs for Change” trip to Uganda in September.  Kathy started on this project in 2016 with a rant Request which was not awarded.  Since then they had received a request from Uganda for 2,000 chairs.  They used one of Kathy’s acquaintances from a prior visit, Dr. Jjuuko Fulgensio, to “vet” the request and interface with the Kampala Rotary Club.  A total of 263 chairs were shipped from the manufacturer in China directly to the Kampala club, which then undertook the legwork of identifying recipients, organizing four distribution events and generally handling all local affairs.  As one might expect, a slew of additional potential projects became evident, including medical and health-related needs, water and sanitation projects and a proposal for a library.  In addition to the five “work days,” the visitors also enjoyed free time to see more of the country.

Raffle:  The chance to draw the Golden Marble for a $320 cash prize was also won by this Scribe  --   for the second week in a row  --  but he was once again denied the opportunity to strike it rich!  All present were naturally very disappointed!

Next Week’s Program:    Seabiscuit will be bringing a friend who is a docent at the defunct Nike Missile Site (SF88) in Marin County.  Additionally, come see this Scribe win another opportunity to pull the Gold Marble (and succeed)!
