President Michael “Sea Biscuit” Roberts opened the meeting at Tomahawk Steak, Chops and Seafood and led us in the Salute to the Flag.  He noted that this year’s Rotary International President is Jennifer Jones, whose theme for the year is “Imagine Rotary.”   This month’s Rotary focus is on Disease Prevention and Treatment.

The Thought for the Day is a quote from John F. Kennedy,  “Those that make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable!”

Happy Dollars:  Chris Gayler announced that on Saturday, December 10, starting around 5:00 pm, Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit 3005 Ascot Drive.  The neighborhood will be appropriately decorated so take a walk with the family to enjoy the sights!  PP Colette Lay noted that her neighborhood, in the area of Woodview Terrace Drive, will also be decorated again with luminaries starting December 17.  Your faithful Scribe bragged about his daughter’s promotion at Caterpillar Corporation to head the HR Department at the former Bucyrus-Erie plant in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Julie McKinney noted that her son has a new job with Club Sport, in San Ramon.  PP Terry Koehne announced that his daughter is now a fully qualified flight attendant with SkyWest Airlines and that he and his son had an opportunity to visit the amazing new Raider’s Stadium in Las Vegas.

Announcements:

Kathy Gailey noted that the Tree of Remembrance is now set up and operational at City Center, in front of the Nike store.  The tree is being “staffed” Thursdays thru Sunday but more volunteers are needed to fill out vacant slots!  If you have the first shift, supplies can be picked up at the Concierge counter, in the immediate area of the tree.

Karen McNamara indicated that our $25.00 Gift Cards for the homeless clients of the Trinity Center in Walnut Creek, will be distributed at a holiday event at 1:00 pm, Friday, December 16.  Members are encouraged to join her for this event.

Sea Biscuit encouraged members to reserve April 29 for the “Truck Time” event sponsored by the Dougherty Valley/San Ramon Rotary Club.  It’s a great event for young and old who want to climb into and learn more about trucks and other professional vehicles.  Feel free to bring a vehicle as well!  Link:  http://trucktimesanramon.org/attend

Seabiscuit noted that we will be “DARK” on December 15th but that there will be an evening get-together at Tomahawk’s for members, spouses and friends.  Time:  5:30 to 7:30.

January 5th will also be “DARK!”

Recognitions:  Birthdays for PP Terry Koehne, December 26, Marv Remmich, December 25, and Cindy Toby, December 23.  Norbert Walz and Jo’s 49th Anniversary on December 22; Jo must be a saint!  Kathy Richardson and Robert’s anniversary as well as Dennis Garrison and Sally’s anniversary.  Three of the six were “recognized” in abstentia!”

Program:   David Kreutzinger, a friend of Sea Biscuit, was recruited into the Army’s Weapons Intern Program while still in High School in Denver, Colorado.  His parents were in favor of this because his duties, following 18 months of training, would keep him in the United States and, more importantly, out of Vietnam.   The threat of ending up in the Infantry was always hanging over his head should he have flunked out of the training or failed in carrying out his duties as an “Electronics Specialist” stationed the NIKE Missile Site (SF-88) in Marin County.  His service at the site was from 1967 to 1969.

NIKE missiles were deployed in 1954 as a means of destroying any attempt by the Soviet Union in attacking the U.S. with atomic bombs using high altitude aircraft.  There were 11 of these secret locations in the Bay Area and 233 in total along the West Coast.  The missiles could carry either conventional or nuclear warheads, the latter of which could destroy any aircraft within 30 miles of the intercept point.  The program was cancelled in 1974 with the signing of the Nuclear Arms Control Treaty.

David has been volunteering at the SF-88 Site for 43 years, first in the capacity of restoring it for posterity and then as a docent leading tours and lectures about the NIKE Missile Program.  He delights in telling his audiences that this missile, when first developed, was a “37-foot beer can, attached to a nuclear warhead.”  They added a radar guidance system, modeled after a Nikola Tesla invention, to turn it into a “Guided Missile.”  About 400,000 NIKE missiles, of various iterations, were built.

The SF-88 Site is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, located in the Marin Headlands, and is open to the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 12:30 to 3:30.  Go to go.nps.gov/nike for more details.

Raffle:  The chance to draw the Golden Marble for a $330 cash prize was NOT won by this Scribe as expected; it was Patti Hennigan!   But she missed grabbing the white marble so next time around the prize will be $340!

Next Week’s Program:    Holiday Party, at 5:30 pm, Thursday, December 15, at Tomahawk.  No regular meetings until January 12th.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
